This image is a mosaic of the original data (at left) compared with the results of contrast enhancement (at right). The processing steps performed to create this image were: * A long, narrow high-pass filter is applied in a vertical orientation to help reduce some of the instrument signature. This signature is seen as the streaking that is noticeable in the original data. * A long, narrow low-pass filter is applied in a horizontal orientation to help create an intensity average for the image...

Photographer: JPL P-21737 C This picture shows a region of the southern hemisphere extending from the Great Red Spot to the south pole. The white oval is seen beneath the Great Red Spot, and several small scale spots are visible farther to the south. Some of these organized cloud spots have similiar morphologies, such as anticyclonic rotations and cyclonic regions to their west. The presence of the white oval causes the streamlines of the flow to bunch up between it and the Great Red Spot.

[image]Hurricane Emily: Natural Hazards - NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
When NASA's Quick Scatterometer (QuickScat) captured this image on July 13, 2005, Emily was just a few hours away from becoming a hurricane. The tropical storm was approaching Trinidad with winds of 95 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour or 50 knots) when this image was taken at 5:05 p.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time (21:05 UTC). The image reveals the structure of the storm, with wind speed shown in color and direction indicated by barbs...

[image]Big Wheels and Tumbleweed Inflatable Rovers - NASA
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Inflatable Rover Program focuses on two types of inflatable vehicles for transport of instrument payloads on distant planets and moons. One, referred to as ''Big Wheels,'' is a lightweight, motor-controlled vehicle with large balloon tires, and the other is a large, wind-blown sphere, referred to as ''Tumbleweed.'' The use of inflatables to increase speed and range is a critical enabling technology that will allow transporting other rovers to distant sites, transpor...

[image]Hurricane Emily: Natural Hazards - NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
Measurements of the wind strength of Hurricane Emily show sustained winds of around 80 knots and gusts up to 100 knots. The images, however, reveal lower wind speeds. This is because the power of the storm makes accurate measurements difficult. The scatterometer sends pulses of microwave energy through the atmosphere to the ocean surface, and measures the energy that bounces back from the wind-roughened surface...
